Space9.Living in the World of Hip HopBiography by Steve Huey According to legend, MC Shan (b. Shawn Moltke) got his big break in 1983 when the future boss of Cold Chillin' Records caught Shan trying to steal his car. Although the fact that old-school super-producer Marley Marl was Shan's cousin probably didn't hurt either, Shan took advantage of the opportunity to become a member of Marl's Juice Crew All-Stars. After several singles (including the old-school classic "The Bridge"), his 1987 album debut Down By Law established a b-boy persona over tracks produced by his cousin. The same held for the 1988 follow-up, Born to Be Wild; on 1990's Play It Again, Shan, he opted for a more mature outlook and a new producer, but it proved to be his final effort. Though he moved into production work, he made a return on "Da Bridge 2001," from Queensbridge's Finest, a 2000 LP released by Nas. MC Shan Real Name: Shawn Moltke Profile: MC Shan got his big break in 1983 when the future boss of Cold Chillin' Records caught Shan trying to steal his car -although the fact that old-school superproducer Marley Marl was Shan's cousin probably didn't hurt either. Shan took advantage of the opportunity to become a member of Marl's Juice Crew All-Stars and after several singles (including the old-school classic "The Bridge"), his 1987 album debut 'Down by Law', produced by his cousin, Marley established MC Shan's B-boy persona. The same held for the 1988 follow-up album, 'Born to Be Wild'. For the 1990 release 'Play It Again, Shan', he opted for a more mature outlook and a new producer, this to date has proved to be his final album release. Shan has since moved into production work. In Groups: QB Finest Review by John Bush MC Shan's album debut wasn't a success, despite the presence of one justifiable rap classic and several other interesting ideas for songs. Most of the problem lay in Marley Marl's productions, which took the sound of MC Shan no farther than his massive hit, "The Bridge," and seemed to merely duplicate the process with every track. Shan opened with a pair of intriguing project stories, one about a solid student turned junkie ("Jane, Stop This Crazy Thing") and the other about an easy girl ("Project 'Ho"). Admittedly, these tracks weren't quite as exciting as they were compelling, but Marley Marl's constant focus on stuttered-sampling madness soon lapsed into mildness and then simple frustration. Shan got a bit more hardcore on "Kill That Noise," responding again to KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions, and finally returned to the astounding energy level of "The Bridge" with a pair of later tracks, "Down By Law" and "Living in the World of Hip Hop."This exquisite piece of retro music history is a 12" vinyl sound recording (not a CD) in either the multi-track long play LP album format or as extended play EP remix 12" maxi - single disco dance record.
